Thinking About Worrying
“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.”
Luke 12:27
We have heard it over and over again from the pulpit… “Don’t worry!”
But have you ever thought of the WHY? What’s the reason we shouldn’t worry?
Jesus explains this in Luke 12.
First of all, He tells us not to worry.
“And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.”
Luke 12:22
Then, He gives us several things to think about when we are tempted to worry.
- Think about the ravens: “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds!” Luke 12:24
- Think about the fact that you can’t increase your height, or lifespan: “And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” Luke 12:25
- Think about the fact that you can’t do it on your own: “If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?” Luke 12:26
- Think about the lilies: “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Luke 12:27
- Think about the grass: “If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?” Luke 12:28
- Think about the notion that you are acting like an unbeliever when you worry: “For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things.” Luke 12:30
When you are tempted to worry, remember the reasons Jesus gave us not to worry.
Also, remember that Jesus told us: “But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.”
Luke 12:31
Finally, remember to pray:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
