Hidden Gems
“Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni tutored the king’s sons.”
1 Chronicles 27:32
What is a hidden gem? Wikipedia defines it as: “Something possessing a value or beauty that is not immediately apparent, which therefore has received far less recognition than it deserves.”
I picture someone digging in the backyard and finding a hidden treasure.
When reading a genealogy, a list of names, we tend to hurry through it. But, sometimes you find a hidden gem like this one:
“Also Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of understanding, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni tutored the king’s sons.”
1 Chronicles 27:32
This verse highlights 2 men.
First one is Jonathan, David’s uncle. He is described as a counselor, man of understanding.
Though he was not well known, he gave good counsel with the wisdom God gave him.
Solomon said:
“Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in abundance of counselors there is victory.”
Proverbs 11:14
The other one is Jehiel. He was a teacher who got to teach the king’s sons. We all know the value of a good educator, one who can skillfully guide a child in their learning.
Quoting Solomon again:
“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6
Like Jonathan and Jehiel, you may not get much recognition, but what you do is important.
Remember to work for the Lord and that your labor counts.
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:58

Pass It On.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:6
I met a man named Steve, a retired engineer and building contractor. He said his dad was a physician who practiced for over 40 years. Steve shared that his dad was a great doctor with a wealth of knowledge.
However, he said that his dad died without sharing his insight with the next generation, which could’ve benefitted from his knowledge.
This has prompted Steve to start teaching an online plumbing course. In this way, he can share his expertise with the next generation.
Moses reminded the children of Israel about the importance of passing knowledge to the next generation in Deuteronomy 11:19. “Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up…”
Unfortunately, after the death of Joshua, who succeeded Moses, and the elders of that generation, the children of Israel didn’t know the Lord…
“All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.”
Judges 2:10
Because they didn’t know the Lord, they started to follow other gods, with disastrous results.
Let’s remember to share our knowledge with the next generation. Your wisdom will make a difference in their lives, Pass it on!
“We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about his power and his mighty wonders.” Psalm 78:4
